Those of us who were young during the 70's remember how hitchhiking around was a rite of passage. This book takes that to extremes, hitching around post-colonial Africa. I also remember reading about all the revolutions and wars over there, but the author made me feel as though I was over there, part of the action and part of how the locals felt about all that. Good adventure with a touching ending, but no tourist tips, hotel reviews, recommendations about what to visit, or even a single restaurant mentioned. This book is OK for travelers looking to bum rides, sleep in huts, and live like hobos, but this is no guide to Africa for a normal person.
I like how the adventures are broken into sections that I could read on the bus coming and going from work. Each little adventure or insight into the locals gave me a shot from far away that I needed to do my day.
Africa always frightened me, but if an immature kid like the author can do what he did, maybe the rest of us can too. What's really scary is how the book got me thinking about grabbing my backpack, a one-way ticket, and as Peter puts it "take off in whatever direction your toes are pointed".
